This year's benefit focuses on autism with the keynote speakers as follows:

Rupert Isaacson, author, Horse Boy. Mr. Isaacson's book tells of the author's son, diagnosed with autism at the age of two, and how he and his wife found their way into their son's world through horses. They didn't stop there. They went to Mongolia to ride horses and seek the help of shamans. The author's goal was to use every tool in his bag to help their son connect with them. And his son did. Dr. Joseph Piven, Director, Carolina Institute of Developmental Disabilities, UNC School of Medicine. The Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities in the UNC School of Medicine was established in July of 2007 to provide the citizens of North Carolina with world class services, research and training relevant to developmental disabilities. The Institute combines two nationally-recognized, stand-alone facilities that address individual aspects of develpmental disabilities. There are the Center for Development and Learning (CDL) and the UNC Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center (IDDRC).

The integration of these programs into a single, new Institute establishes the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities as one of the premier integrated programs for developmental disabililties in the country. The over-arching aim of this new Institute is to provide cutting-edge services, research, and clinical and research training to benefit individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. Additionally, the Institute also leads discussions and planning for services, education , and research on developmental disabilities in North Carolina.
